RALEIGH, N.C. - Tonight, the Wolfpack wrestling squad will be hosting Duke in an ACC dual meet. The Pack will battle the Blue Devils at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum, in the Pack’s home finale.
Standing out as one of the Pack’s top wrestlers is junior Matt Nereim. From Winter Springs, Fla., Nereim wrestles at the 157-pound weight class and has a 16-10 record for the season with an 8-2 record in dual meets. He has won five straight, including three straight in ACC action.
In high school, Nereim was a state champion, a USAW Greco-Roman national champion, and set a national high school record for fastest pin with a four second fall. He also played football and was a competitive weight lifter before joining the Pack.
Nereim recorded 10 wins for the Wolfpack as a freshman, including five pins. Last year, he recorded 20 wins including nine pins. He finished his sophomore season by placing second at the ACC Championships at 149 pounds, qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Nereim is highly skilled technically and specializes in upper body takedowns as well as pins. He has a particularly exciting style which makes him stand out as a fan favorite.
He began wrestling in sixth grade and found success relatively fast. From there, he excelled through middle and high school and then decided to take the next step. He describes closing the gap from high school to college as a relatively smooth transition.
When asked about the Pack’s new coaching staff, Nereim says the change was difficult, but he knew the coaches had his best interest in mind. He says the team is slowly progressing and coming together as a unit.
“We definitely have the right morals and are living the right lifestyle,” said Nereim. “(The staff) is preparing us for future success in all assets of life.”
Nereim finds motivation in his competitive drive and desire to win. He hopes to advance to the finals of the ACC tournament, improve his finish from last year’s NCAA Championships.
It will be an exciting evening for the Wolfpack wrestlers as well as a great ACC battle against Duke.
