Raleigh, N.C. -
NC State redshirt freshman Nick Gwiazdowski continued his stellar redshirt season with a championship at 285 pounds this past weekend at the National Collegiate Open.
The All-American transfer from Binghamton, earned two falls and a major decision to reach the title bout. He captured the tournament title with a medical default win over All-American Spencer Meyers of Maryland, who placed sixth at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Prior to the default, Gwiazdowski held a 6-2 lead in the championships match.
The NCO has become a premier collegiate event for athletes during their redshirt year. Numerous wrestlers have won the event in their redshirt year and returned to the line-up to become All-Americans the following year.
In addition to Gwiazdowski, five other Wolfpack grapplers competed in the National Collegiate Open: John Sparks at 125 pounds, Patrick Hutton at 133 pounds, Cohl Fulk at 149 pounds, Ryan Fox at 165 pounds and Josh Davis at 285 pounds.
