March 3, 2012
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- NC State will have at least four wrestlers in the 2012 NCAA Tournament as Coltin Fought, Darrius Little, Matt Nereim, and Colton Palmer all claimed automatic bids at the 2012 ACC Championships on Saturday.
This years NCAA Championships will be held at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., March 15-17, 2012.
Darrius Little and Matt Nereim both advanced to the finals for the Wolfpack, but fell just short of the conference title and collected second place finishes. Little fell to Nick Nelson of Virginia by decision 3-2 in the second tiebreaker period. At the end of regulation, the score was 1-1 as both wrestlers registered escapes when starting in the down position. The first period of overtime went scoreless before the match proceeded to the tiebreaker periods where Nelson was able to edge Little.
Wolfpack sophomore Matt Nereim started his day off by registering a 7-4 decision over Andrew Guardado of Duke. In his second match, Nereim pinned top-seeded Gus Sako of Virginia just 1 minute three seconds into the match. Nereim faced off against Nick Brashetta of Virginia Tech in the finals and dropped an 8-4 decision and settled for second.
Redshirt senior Colton Palmer claimed an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by finishing in third place in the 157-pound weight class. The Atlantic Coast Conference received 3 automatic bids to the tournament and Palmer made sure that he received one by defeating Cameron Hurd of Virginia Tech in the consolation finals.
Palmer dropped his first match of the day to Hurd, but overcame the earlier lost to defeat Hurd in the consolation finals, 7-5. The Wolfpack senior pinned Jedd Moore of Virginia in the consolation semifinals at 1:46 to claim a spot in the consolation finals. With the pin, Palmer now has 24 career falls which is the eighth highest total in school history.
Freshman Coltin Fought registered two pins en route to a third place finish and a NCAA tournament bid. In his first match of the day, Fought pinned Brian Bokoski of UNC just 42 seconds into the match. His second pin of the day would come over Peter Terrezza of Duke. Fought avenged his prior lost to Terrezza at Duke by getting the fall at 3:15.
At 174, Quinton Godley fell short of claiming an automatic bid but finished third in the weight class. The conference only received two automatic bids at 174. Godley entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the conference and as a result received a first round bye. The 174-pounder dropped a close decision in the semifinals to Chris Moon of Virginia Tech, 3-1. Godley went on to defeat Alex Utley of UNC and Vinny Waldhauser of UVA to claim third place.
