March 8, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C.-- Coltin Fought, Quinton Godley, Darrius Little, Matt Nereim, and Colton Palmer will all be competing for the Wolfpack next week at the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Tournament. The tournament will take place from March 15-17 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The Pack had four wrestlers claim automatic bids at the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships held March 3 at UNC. State received an at-large bid to allow a fifth wrestler to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman Coltin Fought will compete for the Wolfpack in the 125-pound weight class. Hailing from Bloomsburg, Pa., Fought has compiled a record of 28-11 on the season, including a record of 11-1 in matches decided by pin. The Wolfpack freshman broke Darrion Caldwell's record for most pins by a freshman (10) with 11 pins this season.
Redshirt senior Darrius Little will be wrestling for NC State at 141. The senior from Thomasville, N.C., holds a career record of 97-55 and is 33-10 on the season. He is now third in school history for most career victories with 97, just shy of former Wolfpack standouts Darrion Caldwell and Sylvester Terkay. Little was a perfect 14-0 in dual matches this season, including a stretch this season in which Little won 14 straight matches.
At 149, sophomore Matt Nereim will make his first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Nereim, from Winter Springs, Fla., put together a record of 21-13 this season with 10 of those victories coming by fall. He finished in second place at the ACC tournament to claim an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Hailing from Durham, N.C., redshirt senior Colton Palmer would not be denied receiving an automatic bid after coming up just short last year at the 157-pound division. Palmer holds a record of 18-14 on the season, including a team-high 12 pins. With 12 pins this season, Palmer is now tied for seventh in school history with 23 career pins.
Rounding out the field of five will be senior Quinton Godley, who will be wrestling for the Pack at 174. The senior from Greenville, N.C. turned in a 31-13 record this season, and has moved into the Wolfpack history books by recording a 30 win season.
The action will get underway on Thursday March 15 with the first session beginning at 12 p.m ET at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
