NC State Wrestling Sends Two To National Meet This Weekend
March 16, 2005
RALEIGH, N.C. - Two NC State wrestlers, 149-pounder Alex Hernandez and 174-pounder Kevin Gabrielson, will begin competition this weekend at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships, which will begin on Thursday and run through Saturday night in St. Louis Mo.
Gabrielson (20-8), a redshirt-junior from Chesapeake Beach, Md., won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship at 174 pounds two weeks ago to earn the conference's automatic bid to the national meet at that weight classification. Hernandez (16-7), an NCAA qualifier a year ago at 141 pounds, took second at 149 at the ACC Championships and received one of the conference's five at-large bids to the national tournament.
Gabrielson heads into action this weekend having won eight matches in a row, four of them by pins, and 11 of his last 13. Six of Gabrielson's last 11 victories were by fall.
Hernandez lost to Virginia Tech's Tyde Prater in the finals of the ACC Tournament, snapping a six-match winning streak. Hernandez was seeded No. 1 in the 149-pound classification, but split two regular-season bouts with Prater, losing at the Navy Classic and winning during the regular-season dual match between the Wolfpack and Hokies. Hernandez enters the national tournament having won 11 of his last 13 matches.
