Gwiazdowski Records Multiple Wins at U.S. World Team Trials
June 23, 2013
Stillwater, Okla. - NC State redshirt sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski had an impressive showing at the 2013 U.S. World Team Trials this past weekend in Stillwater, Okla. Gwiazdowski finished third in the challenge tournament, just one spot shy of making the USA World Team.
"This is a great way to finish up a redshirt season for Nick," said NC State head coach Pat Popolizio. "He will gain a lot of confidence off of this performance. He has shown he can compete with the best wrestlers in the country."
Gwiazdowski started with a 9-0 technical fall win over 2012 and 2013 NCAA heavyweight champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota. After advancing with the win, Gwiazdowski then fell to another NCAA champion, Zach Rey, 5-2.
Gwiazdowski came right back and recorded two more victories to conclude his run. First, he scored a 9-1 technical fall over former Wisconsin All-American, Kyle Massey. In the third place match, Gwiazdowski once again defeated the reigning two-time NCAA champion, Tony Nelson, this time, 6-4.
Also competing for the Pack was junior Thomas Gantt in the junior division at 74 KG. He started his day with a 9-2 technical fall win over Micah Barnes, but fell to Alex Dieringer, who finished third at the 2013 NCAA Championships, in the next round. Gantt was then pinned by Brandon Kingsley, a university national finalist, in the wrestle backs to conclude his day.
Former Pack wrestler Quinton Godley also wrestled in the senior division at 74 KG. He fell to seventh-ranked Colt Sponseller to open the tournament, then fell to ninth-ranked Moza Fay to conclude his day. Both of his losses were to former NCAA All-Americans.
