Kelly Olympic Blog: Long Journey from Raleigh to Belarus
July 31, 2012
Assistant wrestling coach Jamill Kelly traveled to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and will serve as part of the support staff for USA Wrestling. Kelly recently joined the Pack coaching staff as part of new head coach Pat Popolizio's first staff.
Kelly: My trip has finally begun beginning with a long day of travel from Raleigh to Belarus. I along with the other support staff and coaches will be meeting the team in Belarus for a week of training before heading to London on August 6 for the competition which begins August 10th.
The U.S. head coach felt it was better to get the team out of London and the distractions to concentrate on the competition. We will be spending a week at the Belarus Olympic training center Minsk. I’m looking forward to doing some fine tuning with the guys as well as learning some different techniques from the other coaches.
At this point, we will have one week of pretty intense training before tapering down and start getting ready for weigh-ins. The USOC does an incredible job with making sure the athletes have everything they need. A nutritionist from the USOC prepared a menu for all the food that is to be served while we are in Belarus. We also have a chiropractor, masseuse, trainer and team doctor.
I’ve been fortunate to have been able to have attended very Olympic Games since 2000. I’ve been a training partner, athlete and coach. I’ve been to the World Series, NBA Finals and Super Bowl, but I can tell you nothing compares to the Olympic Games. Looking forward to a great trip and helping to bring some medals home to the U.S.
