Kelly Olympic Blog: Arriving in London
Aug. 6, 2012
Assistant wrestling coach Jamill Kelly traveled to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and will serve as part of the support staff for USA Wrestling. Kelly recently joined the Pack coaching staff as part of new head coach Pat Popolizio's first staff.
Kelly: The past couple of days have been a little busy. After discussion with all of the coaches we decided to leave Belarus a couple of days early, which made everyone a little excited.
The team was fortunate enough to fly private while the rest of us flew commercial. We arrived in London on Saturday after a morning workout in Belarus. The team was then given the rest of the day off as well as Sunday to rest and see their friends and family.
I decided to use this time to do the touristy thing and see the sites of London. It was awesome seeing Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and all the things I've read about and seen on TV.
The last part of the day I went to the USA house where Olympians and other VIPS are allowed to congregate and celebrate Team USA performances. It's a great feeling to be surrounded by other Olympians and share stories about their experiences.
I was fortunate enough to run into Todd Rogers 2008 Beach volleyball Gold Medalist. I mentioned I knew (NC State strength coach) Bob Alejo whom he had much praise and admiration for. I asked him if he was sure we were talking about the same guy, and he assured me Bob is a winner and a great asset to the Wolfpack family.
Looking forward to starting off the week. The hay is in the barn, now it's time for the team to cash in. Nothing but weight control and fine tuning from here on out.
