    NC State Wrestling Lands 15 On ACC's 50th Anniversary Team

    RALEIGH, N.C. - As would befit a program that has won 12 Atlantic Coast Conference championships in the last 27 years, NC State landed 15 former wrestlers on the ACC's 50-man 50th Anniversary Wrestling Team, announced by the conference on August 15.

    Former NCAA champions Sylvester Terkay (1990-93), Scott Turner (1984-88), Tab Thacker (1981-84) and Matt Reiss (1980-82) led the way for the Wolfpack. Also making the team from NC State were Frank Castrignano (1979-82), Brian Jackson (1989), Mike Koob (1977-80), Chris Kwortnik (1991-94), Joe Lidowski (1977-80), Mike Miller (1992-93 and 1995-96), Chris Mondragon (1981-84), Marc Sodano (1986-87), Michael Stokes (1986-89), Steve Williams (1989-92) and Jim Zenz (1977-80).

    NC State was one of two schools, joining North Carolina, to place 15 wrestlers on the 50th Anniversary Team. Maryland was second with 10, followed by Virginia with seven and Clemson with three.

    Following are capsules of NC State's 15 members of the ACC's 50th Anniversary Team:

    Frank Castrignano, NC State (1979-1982) Made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAAs in 1981 ... finished fifth place in 1982 at 150lbs ... was an All-American in 1982 and ACC champion at 150 ... Co-captain of the Pack in 1982.

    Brian Jackson, NC State (1989) All-ACC honoree in 1989 ... was an All-American heavyweight in the same year ... Finished 5th place in the NCAAs in 1989 ... Had 38 wins as a junior, which is the best ever for a junior at NC State and second best for a season.

    Mike Koob, NC State (1977-1980) Co-captain in 1980 ... A two-time ACC Champion and an All-American at 134 in 1977 ... Finished in the quarterfinals of the NCAAs in 1980 at 150lbs ... Tied for 9th in most season victories with 29 ... Has the seventh best winning percentage at .816 ... His 81 wins is seventh best ... 29 wins as a freshman is tied for first place among NC State freshmen.

    Chris Kwortovik, NC State (1991-1994) All-ACC in 1992, 93, 94 ... Two-time ACC champion and an All-American in 1991, 92, and 93... Tied for sixth for most wins as a junior with 25 ... Tied for 12th for most career victories with 69 ... has the 9th best winning percentage (.814) at State with a record of 69-15-2.

    Joe Lidowski, NC State (1977-1980) Captain of the Wolfpack in 1979 ... Co-captain in 1980... A four-time ACC champion and an All-American in 1977 at 177 lbs ... 77 career victories ranks 8th best at NC State ... 23 victories as a freshman is third best.

    Mike Miller, NC State (1992-1993, 1995-1996) Co-captain in 1996 and All-ACC in 1995, 96 ... Two-time ACC champion in 1995, 96 at 118lbs ... 1993 Honorable mention Academic All-American ... ACC Honor Roll in 1993, 95 and 96 ... Finished seventh place in the NCAAs in 1996, and was also an All-American that same year ... Ranks 11th all time in career wins with 73 ... 29 wins as a junior, third best overall, and tied for 9th for best season production.

    Chris Mondragon, NC State (1981-1984) Fifth best in wins as a junior, with 27 in 1983, which is also tied for 11th best season production ... 75 career wins is 9th best at NC State ... Posted an overall record of 75-20-3 (.780) ... Tied for 13th best ... Finished 7th place at the NCAAs in 1983 at 158lbs and was selected as an All-American ... Three-time ACC champion and ACC Tournament MVW in 1983 ... Co-captain of his team in 1984.

    Matt Reiss, NC State (1980-1982) Ranks second in most wins by an NC State freshman with 29, which is also tied for the ninth best season performance ... Holds the fourth best career winning percentage at State (.825) with a record of 51-10-2 ... 1980 NCAA Champion at 167 ... Finished eighth at NCAAs in 1981 ... Was an All-American in 1980 and 81 ... Two-time ACC champion.

    Marc Sodano, NC State (1986-1987) Fifth best in wins as a senior with 31 which also is ranked seventh for best season production ... Record of 50-10-2 (.822) is the fifth best winning percentage at NC State ... Finished in sixth place at the NCAAs in 1987 at 126 lbs ... Was also an All-American the same year ... A two-time ACC champion in 1986 and 87... ACC Tournament MVW in 1987 and All-ACC in 1986, 87.

    Michael Stokes, NC State (1986-1989) Fourth best in wins as a senior with 34, which is also tied for fifth best for a season ... Thirteenth most career victories with 68 ... Posted a record of 68-8-3 (.879) which is the best career winning percentage at NC State ... Finished second at the NCAAs at 126 lbs in 1989, the same year was selected as an All-American ... ACC champion at 126 in 1988, 89 ... ACC Tournament MVW in 1989 ... All-ACC honoree in 1988, 89 and co-captain of the Pack in 1989.

    Sylvester Terkay, NC State (1990-1993) Known as the "Bear," went undefeated at 41-0 as a senior, the best mark by a NC State wrestler ... 35 wins as a junior, second best mark and 32 wins as a sophomore, the ... Holds first place for number of career victories at 122 and his 41 wins as a senior is the best season mark at NC State ... 64 career pins, which is the most at NC State and his record of 122-14 (.897) winning percentage is good enough for first place ... The NCAA champion heavyweight in 1993 ... Runner-up in 1992 ... Winner of All-American honors in 1991, 92, and 93 ... Academic All-American in 1991, 92, 93, as well as ACC Honor Roll for the same years ... All-ACC in 1990, 91, 92, & 93 ... A four time ACC champion ... Co-captain of his team in 92 and 93 ... ACC's wrestler of the year in 1991, 92, & 93.

    Tab Thacker, NC State (1981-1984) One of the biggest heavyweights of all time at more than 450 pounds ... Winner of four ACC titles, as well as the 1984 NCAA national championship ... Won 31 matches as a senior, which ranks fifth best total for a senior at NC State and is tied for seventh best season record at NC State ... Tied for fourth overall at NC State in career victories with 92 wins ... Is second in Wolfpack history in most career pins with 54 ... Holds a 92-11-1 (.889) winning percentage, second best among the Pack ... An All-American selection in both 1983 and 84 ... Co-captain of the Pack in 1984.

    Scott Turner, NC State (1984-1988) A three-time ACC champion, and the 1988 national champ at 150 lbs ... ACC Tournament MVW in 1984 (142lbs) and 88 (150) ... All-ACC in 86 and 88 ... Co-captain of the Pack in 1986, and 88 ... All-American selection in 1986 and 88 ... Voted as the NCAA Tournament's outstanding wrestler in 1988 ... Third most career victories (94) at NC State ... 30 wins in 1988, ranks 8th best at State ... Holds 6th place in career winning percentage at State with a record of 94-19-4 (.820).

    Steve Williams, NC State (1989-1992) Tied for 12th in career wins at NC State with 69 ... Tied for ninth place for wins in a season with 29 in 1992 ... Finished sixth at the NCAAs at 177 in 1992 and an All-American in the same year ... ACC Honor Roll in 1991, 92 ... A two-time ACC champion and All-ACC in 1991 and 92 ... Co-captain of the Pack in 1992.

    Jim Zenz, NC State (1977-1980) The first ever NC State wrestler to place at the NCAA Tournament, finishing sixth at 118 pounds in 1979 ... Had 34 wins as a senior, which is tied for third by a NC State senior ... Tied for fourth place with Tab Thacker in career victories with 92 ... Tied with Michael Stokes for fifth place in most wins in a season with 34 ... With a 92-22-1 record (.804), holds 10th place in best winning percentage at NC State ... Finished third in the NCAAs in 1980 ... Was an All-American in 1979 and 80 ... A two-time ACC champion ... Co-captain of the Pack in 1980.
