RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State wrestling head coach Pat Popolizio has announced that junior Thomas Gantt will serve as the Pack’s team captain for the 2013-14 season.
“Tommy exemplifies Pack Mentality,” said the second-year head coach. “He is an outspoken leader for our program, and he demonstrates the type of intensity and consistency we are hoping to see in all our student-athletes. He has bought into our philosophy from day one, and has done a tremendous job helping us instill that philosophy to a very young team.
Gantt, a native of Cahokia, Ill., had a breakout summer with a second-place finish at the FILA Junior National Championships at 74 KG and a fourth-place finish at the University Nationals at 70 KG. Gantt’s performance at the FILA Junior competition qualified him for the FILA Junior World Team Trials.
Prior to the freestyle season, Gantt capped a strong sophomore year for NC State by finishing third at the ACC Championships at 149 pounds. Throughout the season, he notched wins over several ranked wrestlers, including a 6-3 win over NCAA quarterfinalist Kevin Tao of American at the Southern Scuffle. Gantt also finished third at the Reno Tournament of Champions last December.
The NC State wrestling squad kicks off the season on Nov. 1 with the Red and White Wrestle-offs at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Gym. The No. 26 Pack begins official competition when it hosts the Wolfpack Open on November 17, also at Carmichael Gym.
