BLACKSBURG, VA. - The NC State wrestling team opened up its 2012-13 campaign this past weekend, traveling to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Hokie Open. The meet was also the first for NC State's Pat Popolizio at the helm of the Pack.

The Pack had a pair of wreslters compete in a Wolfpack uniform, while five wrestlers went unattached.

The Pack's weekend was highlighted by transfer All-American Nick Gwiazdowski wining the 285-pound bracket. Although he has to sit out this season, Gwiazdowski was in top form.

After an injury bye, Gwiazdowski recorded back-to-back pins, at 1:14 and then at 0:57. After a 5-3 win to advance to the finals, Gwiazdowski notched his third pin of the day in the championship round to defeat Adam Chalfani of Indiana at the 7:00 mark.

Redshirt-sophomore Steve Ramos won his first bout in double overtime 6-5, but then fell 12-5 in the next round. After an injury bye in the consolation bracket, Ramos was defeated 5-2.

Freshman Mike Kosoy saw his first action as a member of the Pack, as the freshman wrestled at 285 pounds. Kosoy lost his first contest 3-1, and moved to the consolation bracket. After advancing due to an opponent injury, Kosoy recorded a pin at 2:57 to advance, but then fell 5-3 to end his tournament.

NC State opens its season next weekend, as the Pack will host the Wolfpack Open all day next Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum.
