NC State Wrestling Opens With 34-13 Romp Over Campbell
RALEIGH, N.C. – Darrion Caldwell and Joe Caramanica had first-period pins, Taylor and GarrettCummings led off the match with back-to-back major decisions, and Mark Jahad clinched it with a technical fall as NC State defeated Campbell 34-13 Wednesday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
The match – the first of a tripleheader featuring NC State, Campbell and Liberty – was the season-opener for both schools.
Taylor Cummings, a redshirt-freshman seeing his first varsity action, had a takedown and a near fall early in the first period and never eased up in downing Richie Apolinar 14-3. Garrett Cummings, up next, ended his match with a flurry, taking down David Wise four times in the third period to record the 14-5 decision and give the Pack an 8-0 lead in the team score.
Heralded freshman 141-pounder Darrion Caldwell was not on the mat long in his collegiate debut, but he made the most of it, pinning Kelin Bidelspach in just 13 seconds to give the Wolfpack a 14-0 lead. Sophomore 149-pounder Joe Caramanica was not as quick in pinning Chris Mazzetta, but his fall at 2:03 gave NC State a 20-0 lead after four bouts.
Campbell got on the scoreboard at 157 when Steve Wiktorek upset Kody Hamrah 8-4. Wiktorek got a takedown and a near fall in the first period to set the tone for the match, then put the bout out of reach with a reversal to start the third period. Obie Simpson’s 11-7 decision over Brent Poynter gave the Pack a 20-point lead again at 23-3, but Dillon Landi scored a major decision at 174 over Cameron Reeves, 13-5, to make it 23-7. Landi scored two takedowns and a near fall in the third period, and made it a major with a point for advantage time.
Kyle Higgins of Campbell won the match at 184 by forfeit to make it 23-13, but it was all Wolfpack after that. Mark Jahad scored a technical fall over Rob Yoder, 21-4 at the 6:54 mark, and Jainor Palma pinned Jeremiah Fennell at 2:52.
