NC State Wrestling Set For ACC/Big Ten Clash
RALEIGH, N.C. — With a season-opening doubleheader victory over Campbell and Liberty in the rear-view mirror, the NC State wrestling team jumps into the deep end of the pool Saturday with matches against three teams from the Big Ten in the first annual ACC/Big Ten Clash.

The ACC/Big Ten Clash, which will be held at Chapel Hill’s Carmichael Auditorium and begins at noon, features NC State, Virginia and North Carolina from the ACC, and Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue from the Big Ten. NC State will open with Purdue at noon, and then will take on 15th-ranked Wisconsin and finish up the afternoon against 12th-ranked Northwestern.

“This weekend will provide us with an opportunity to measure where we are at this point against three top-quality teams,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said. “The Big Ten is a power conference in wrestling, and our kids will be challenged in all three matches. I think we’re up to that challenge. We’ve had a good week of practices, and I know the kids are looking forward to it.”

NC State opened the year November 8 by beating Campbell 34-13 and Liberty 32-6 in a triple-header at Reynolds Coliseum. The three opponents the Wolfpack will face on Saturday will present much greater competition, with 10 ranked wrestlers between the three.

Purdue features ninth-ranked Nate Moore at 197 pounds. Northwestern has a pair of wrestlers ranked No. 1 nationally in Ryan Lang at 141 and Jake Herbert at 184, plus 12th-ranked 197-pounder Mike Tamillow and fourth-ranked heavyweight Dustin Fox. Wisconsin will line up Tyler Turner at 149 and Craig Henning at 157, both of whom are ranked No. 4 nationally, plus No. 10 Dallas Herbst at 197 and No. 16 Kyle Massey at heavyweight.

NC State will be without Ryan Goodman, ranked No. 11 at 197. Goodman will be in Chapel Hill, but with the Wolfpack football team. He will not be available for wrestling before the Southern Scuffle at the end of December.

Aside from Goodman, however, NC State should be at full strength. The Wolfpack features seniors Jeremy Hartrum, Garrett Cummings and Jainor Palma at 125, 133 and heavyweight, respectively, plus defending ACC champions Kody Hamrah at 157 and Jeremy Colbert at 184. Hamrah and Colbert are juniors. Sophomore 149-pounder Joe Caramanica received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships last year.
