RALEIGH, N.C. — For the third time in as many weeks, the NC State wrestling team will participate in an open tournament Saturday, the 31st annual Pembroke Classic in the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke, N.C.
Fans wishing to follow the action on-line, updated brackets will be available on the UNC Pembroke website and will be updated hourly until the event is completed.
Wrestlers from more than a dozen schools are expected at the Pembroke Classic, including student-athletes from NC State, Duke, Appalachian State, Old Dominion and North Carolina, as well as representatives from a host of Division II schools including Newberry, Limestone and St. Andrews. Wrestling will take place on six mats in the main gym of the Jones Center.
Officially, NC State will send six wrestlers to the Pemboke Classic: Colton Palmer (157 pounds), Nijel Jones and Steven Ramos (165), Quinton Godley (174), KaRonne Jones (197) and Eloheim Palma (heavyweight).
In addition, 10 Wolfpack freshmen will wrestle unattached. Senior 141-pounder Darrius Little also will compete unattached. The 10 freshmen are Coltin Fought (125), Ben Elliott (133), Joey Gaccione and Thomas Gantt (149), Mardel Gabriel (157), Bret Peltier (174), Robert O’Neill (184), Nick Watson (197), and John Hyzak and Josh Davis (heavyweight).
The tournament is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Admission is $10 for an all-day pass. Children 5 and under will be admitted free. The championship bouts are expected to get underway at approximately 5 p.m. Awards will be presented for the top six placewinners, as well as the event’s most outstanding wrestler.
