RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State head coach Pat Popolizio has announced that seven student-athletes have signed with the Pack during the fall signing period. All seven have won high school state championships during their prep careers.
“We are really excited about the impact this group of young men will make at NC State,” said Popolizio. “The thing that stands out most about this group is their character, that was a major focus for our staff in the recruiting process. We are confident that this group will be very successful both athletically and academically. Each of these young men embodies the concept of Pack Mentality.”
Here’s a look at each of the Pack’s signees:
Madison, Conn. • Wyoming Seminary Prep
Competing at Wyoming Seminary Prep School … Previously attended Hand High School in Connecticut … Posts a high school record of 110-11 … Placed third at the National Prep Championships at 120 pounds as a junior … Also third at the FILA Cadet National Championships at 58kg … Was the New England Champion at 120 pounds and Connecticut State Open Champion at 120 pounds as a sophomore … Placed third at the New England State Championships at 103 pounds and second at the Connecticut State Open Championships at 103 pounds as a freshman.
“Will has flown under the radar as he missed part of last season with an injury,” said Popolizio. “He will have a breakout senior year. He showed how good he was this spring by dominating a Fargo National Champion at the FILA Cadet Nationals. Will is skilled on the mat and very athletic, we expect big things out of him in college.”
Alexandria, Ky. • Campbell County HS
Competing at Campbell County High School … Posts a high school record of 234-24 with 115 pins … Currently ranked as a top-100 recruit by flowrestling.org and d1collegewrestling.net … Placed fifth at the NHSCA High School Nationals at 126 pounds as a junior … Kentucky state champion at 132 pounds with a perfect 62-0 record … A FILA Cadet National Champion at 58kg … Finished ninth in the FILA Cadet World Championships at 58kg, and eighth at Fargo Junior Freestyle Nationals at 126 pounds as a junior … Took second at NHSCA Sophomore Nationals at 120 pounds … Placed third at state championships at 126 pounds as a sophomore and third at FILA Cadet Nationals at 58kg … Took second at state championships at 119 pounds as a freshman … As an eight-grader, placed third at high school state championships at 112 pounds … Plans to major in business or engineering.
“Sean brings a wealth of wrestling knowledge to our program,” said Popolizio. “He has already made a world team and competed internationally. We expect him to continue to do that at the next level. The world-level experience will allow him to compete with the best guys in the country right away. He is the ideal student-athlete as he excels both in the classroom and on the mat.”
Harrisburg, N.C. • Hickory Ridge HS
Competing at Hickory Ridge High School … Posts a high school record of 127-7 … Placed six at the Super 32 at 120 pounds prior to his senior season … Was the North Carolina state champion at 120 pounds as a junior … Also a Disney Duals All-American at 113 as a junior … Placed third at the state championships at 113 pounds as a sophomore, and qualified for the state championships at 103 pounds as a freshman.
“Troy is consistently and constantly improving,” said Popolizio. “He has really blossomed over the last year, winning a state title and placing at the Super 32. He has a ton of potential. We made it a priority to keep the best wrestlers in state and we did that with Troy. We will continue to keep the best North Carolina wrestlers in state.”
Coram, N.Y. • Wyoming Seminary Prep
Competing at Wyoming Seminary Prep School as a postgrad … Previously attended Longwood High School in New York … A top-100 recruit by flowrestling.org, intermatwrestle.com, and d1collegewrestling.net … Finished with over 200 high school wins … Was the Super 32 runner-up at 182 pounds … Was the National Prep Champion at 170 pounds as a senior … The Hurricane Classic Champion at 170 pounds and Caruso Tournament Champion at 160 pounds as a senior … Also finished seventh at the Walsh Ironman Tournament at 160 pounds, fifth in the Beast of the East at 160 pounds, and seventh at the Doc Buchanan Tournament at 170 pounds … Placed second at the New York State Championship at 152 pounds as a junior and fifth at the Eastern States Championships at 152 pounds … Took fourth at the New York State Championships at 145 pounds as a sophomore, and third at the Eastern States Championships at 145 pounds … Plans to major in business.
“Nick was an important pick-up for our team and will look to immediately break into our line-up,” said Popolizio. “He will compete at a very high level right away. He is hard-nosed and has very lofty goals. His father was an All-American wrestler at the NCAA Division I level, and Nick expects to accomplish that in is first year on campus.”
Danbury, Conn. • Danbury HS
Competing at Danbury High School … Posts a high school record of 122-11 … Finished sixth at the Super 32 at 126 pounds … The Connecticut Wrestler of the Year according to WIN Magazine as a junior … The New England state champion at 120 pounds with a perfect 42-0 record, he was also the Connecticut State Open champion and Eastern State champion … Finished fourth at the NHSCA Junior High School nationals as a junior, and sixth at the Super 32 at 120 pounds … The New England state runner-up at 106 pounds as a sophomore with a 45-1 record … Placed sixth at the NHSCA Sophomore High School nationals … The Connecticut Open Champion and Eastern States Champion, both at 106 pounds … As a freshman, took fourth at the Eastern State Championships at 96 pounds and was 35-10.
“Kevin comes to us from the same club (Iowa Style) as current starter and NCAA qualifier Sam Speno,” said Popolizio. “Kevin has the focus and ability to win as soon as he steps into the line-up. He is consistent and does not get rattled. He is very dangerous on top and exciting to watch.”
Cheyenne, Wyo. • Central HS
Competing at Central High School … Posts a high school record of 123-8 … Ranked as a top 100 recruit by intermatwrestle.com, d1collegewrestling.net, and flowrestling.org … Won the Wyoming state championships at 132 pounds as a junior … Placed sixth at the NHSCA High School Junior nationals at 126 pounds … Also took third at the Fargo Junior Freestyle National Championships at 126 pounds and seventh at the Walsh Ironman Championships at 126 pounds … The state champion at 113 pounds as a sophomore and placed second at the NHSCA Sophomore High School national … Also finished fifth at the Fargo Junior Freestyle National Championships at 120 pounds … As a freshman, was the state champion at 103 pounds and placed fourth at the NHSCA Freshman High School national … Was third at the Reno Tournament of Champions at 103 pounds and seventh at the Fargo Cadet Greco Roman Nationals … Plans to major in business.
“Bryce knows how to win big matches,” said Popolizio. “We were especially impressed with him at the Fargo Junior Freestyle Nationals this summer as he showed a lot of grit getting injured and then coming back to place third in a very good bracket. He is a hammer on top and fits right into our style of wrestling.”
McDonough, Ga. • Woodward Academy
Competing at Woodward Academy … Posts a high school record of 243-28 … The Georgia state champion at 132 pounds as a junior … Placed second at the Prep Slam at 132 pounds … Also the Georgia state champion at 126 pounds as a sophomore, and took fourth at the Prep Slam at 126 pounds … Finished third at the Georgia state championships at 112 pounds as a freshman, and sixth at the Prep Slam at 112 pounds … Joins his older brother, Chad, on the Wolfpack squad … Plans to major in business.
“Chandler is an outstanding young man,” said Popolizio. “He works hard and is driven to succeed. He has done a lot of extra work on his own to accomplish his goals. Chandler brings outstanding character and values to our program. He will be a leader not only on our team, but also in the community. He is going to make an impact at NC State.
