RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State wrestling team went out into the community on Tuesday to carry out a special holiday mission. All 27 members of the team, as well as the coaches, contributed monetary donations to fund a Thanksgiving meal for a family in need.
“We think it’s important for a couple reason,” said assistant coach Steve Anceravage. “Number one, it’s important to support those in need in the community. A lot of us- the wrestlers and coaches- have been blessed with some pretty great opportunities, and we’ve been influenced and helped along the way, so we think that it’s important to pass that forward.”
The team was given a list of what the family needed for Thanksgiving, and went out and bought all the items. The wrestlers then gathered as a group on Tuesday and took the food over to the family that they had chosen to donate to.
“It was a great lesson, it really puts into perspective the daily struggles that the guys and we, as coaches, go through, and those that some of the families in need in our community go through,” said Anceravage. “It makes us realize how lucky we are to have the opportunities that we have.”
The family was overjoyed to receive the donations, and to be able to make a holiday feast that they would otherwise have not had the funds to do.
“At NC State, we’re not about just wrestling but also about helping these young men grow,” Anceravege said. “Hopefully by the time they graduate, they will go on to become great community leaders, and part of that is helping your neighbors.”
