For the past 30 years, Dr. Wallace Andrew has had the privilege to serve as a team orthopaedist for the 23 varsity sports teams. He has the knowledge and expertise to manage the care of athletes with all types of sports injuries with extensive experience in treating upper extremity injuries.

He completed his internship and residency at Columbia University in New York City, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Andrew then served a fellowship in Hand Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia under the directorship of Dr. Frank McCue, the long-time sports medicine physician at the University of Virginia. Dr. Andrew is currently the senior partner at Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, Wake County's largest, most established orthopedic practice, where he specializes in sports medicine and particularly in injuries to the upper extremity.

Like most sports medicine physicians, Dr. Andrew has a background in athletics. In high school, he participated in all sports and continued on to be a distance runner at the University of Virginia. Nowadays he is mostly a spectator, but still has an avid interest in sports and sports medicine. He has been a long-time team physician at Broughton High School in Raleigh. On Friday nights in the fall it is likely to find him standing on the sidelines at a Broughton football game, and the next day you'll most likely find him at NC State working with the athletes in some capacity or another. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Andrew has had the opportunity to be on the sidelines and in the stands for many athletic events at NC State, and has a tremendous amount of experience in dealing with athletes. He enjoys taking care of the athletes for the unique challenge to return them to their elite level of participation. However, like most sports medicine physicians, he also realizes that these athletes have a long life after their days of competition and that the correct decisions need to be made for life-long musculoskeletal health.

Dr. Andrew is also recognized as a leader and educator in the community. He is the past president of the Southeastern Hand Club, the North Carolina Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the Medical Staff at WakeMed Health and Hospitals. In addition, Dr. Andrew is committed to promoting orthopaedic education in the Triangle. He is currently on the board of the Dameron Orthopaedic Education Foundation, and has served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he received the Harry E. Dacomb, MD award for his significant contributions to clinical teaching and care, and on numerous occasions, Dr. Andrew was selected as the Clinical Faculty Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Matthew Boes is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with specialty certification in sports medicine from the American Board of Orthopeadic Surgery. A member of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, the Triangle's premiere orthopaedic practice, his areas of expertise include sports medicine; arthroscopy; and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, elbow and knee.

At NC State, Dr. Boes serves as team physician for the football and baseball teams, providing sideline coverage and weekly clinic hours for these sports. His treatment philosophy is centered on always doing what is in the best interests of the individual student-athlete. Division I college athletes are, by their very nature, extremely competitive and hard-working and want to be "back in the game" as soon as possible. Every effort is made to quickly return patients to full competitive function, but there may be times when a quick return is not beneficial to the long-term health and well-being of the athlete. Dr. Boes believes it is always important to consider not only the health and performance of the athlete during a particular season, but also to ensure that the athlete remains healthy and fully functional well into adulthood and long after their playing days are over.

A Boston native, Dr. Boes completed both medical school and residency at Boston University. He was selected for two prestigious year-long fellowships in shoulder & elbow surgery and sports medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. He received numerous awards throughout his medical training, and has authored journal articles, orthopaedic textbook chapters, and given lectures on topics such as rotator cuff repair, shoulder and elbow injuries in athletes, fracture healing, and ACL reconstruction. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, as well as the North Carolina Medical and Orthopaedic Societies.

An avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Boes' hobbies include running, golfing, hiking, swimming, snow skiing and trap shooting. His passion for health and physical activity has led him to serve on the board of trustees for Be Active North Carolina, a statewide initiative committed to helping North Carolinians improve their health and well-being by pursuing physically active lifestyles. His most valued position and title are that of husband and father, and he enjoys spending most of his free time with his wife and daughter.
