Dr. William Jacobs brings a wide range of education, expertise and experience to the athletics program at NC State University.
A native of Tennessee, Jacobs grew up in the Southeastern United States before moving to California. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis, graduating summa cum laude with a BS in Zoology. He attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, followed by an internship and residency at Michigan State University in a combined program in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. At MSU, he served as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. He achieved Board Certification in both specialties.
Jacobs has lived in Raleigh since 1990, and has worked with North Carolina State University's Sports Medicine program for almost two decades. He has attended many formal conferences in Sports Medicine, including The American Academy of Sports Medicine's Team Physician Courses (I and II).
He is a partner at the prestigious Raleigh Medical Group, the oldest Internal Medicine practice in the area. His primary practice emphasizes care for adults aged 16 to 160, with particular interests in Sports Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and clinical research. His unique combination of Medicine and Pediatrics training is ideal for caring for issues that young men and women may encounter in the transition to early adulthood.
At NC State, Jacobs shares responsibility for the general health of almost 600 varsity student-athletes. Typical services include pre-participation evaluations, acute illness care, management of chronic medical conditions such as asthma and ADD, and injury related care such as concussion management. With the other program physicians, he coordinates care with a team of surgeons and other specialists committed to the health and well-being of our student-athletes.
Jacobs has provided sideline coverage for men's basketball, women's soccer and women's volleyball and has covered a wide range of events, including Men's and Women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments, Men's and Women's College Cup (Soccer National Championships), ACC Volleyball Championships, and NCAA Gymnastics Competition.
His three daughters are all athletes, and he also serves as a youth coach in soccer and volleyball, while his wife, Sharon, has served on the Board of Directors of a local volleyball club and served as coordinator of a local summer swim team.
