LONG BEACH, Calif. – Double-doubles by Bonae Holston and Brittany Strachan led NC State to a 92-72 win over Long Beach State in the final game of the Beach Classic at Walter Pyramid.
NC State moved above .500 with its third-straight victory, and now stands at 7-6 with one non-league game left.
Holston notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Strachan posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
The balanced scoring continued for the Wolfpack as six different players reached double-figure point totals - Marissa Kastanek (13), Devin Griffin (career-high 12), Amber White (11) and Kody Burke (10) - the first time it happened since 2006 against Miami.
Having allowed Long Beach to climb back into the game with a late first-half run, NC State exploded out of the locker room with the first seven points of the second half and never relinquished the lead from that point on.
It was 66-56 after Griffin’s put back with 9:49 to play.
Brandi Henton, the 49ers leading scorer, picked up her fourth foul with 11:50 to play and that made it even harder for The Beach to make a comeback against the Pack.
A three from Strachan, and a steal and layup by Goodwin-Coleman sealed the victory by putting the Pack up 86-72 with 1:43 to play.
92 points is the most scored for the Wolfpack going all the way back to a 97-62 win over UAB on Dec. 4, 2004.
With the Wolfpack holding to a slim 9-8 lead, Strachan capped a 17-2 run with a three-pointer at the 12:06 mark, giving NC State its largest lead of the opening half.
The lead was still a 14-point, 35-21, advantage after Kastanek’s third triple of the half with 5:43 until halftime.
NC State built its lead with six three-pointers, but Long Beach State used the same tactic to march right back into the game.
Three-pointers on three consecutive possessions by the 49ers fueled a furious 13-1 run that made it 38-36 Pack with 1:12 until intermission.
Holston’s short jumper stopped the bleeding for a minute, but back-to-back buckets in the final 36 seconds by The Beach knotted the game 40-all at the break.
Courtney Jacob and Tipesa Moorer led Long Beach State (2-11) with 14 points apiece.
After the Christmas break NC State hosts Fairfield on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m., from Reynolds Coliseum.
