SAN DIEGO – The NC State women’s basketball team picked up its sixth straight win Saturday evening at the 2013 San Diego Surf ‘N Slam Tournament, claiming a 77-60 decision over the Kansas State Wildcats. Senior post players Markeisha Gatling and Kody Burke each recorded double-doubles in the victory.

The win gives the Wolfpack (12-1) its second six-game winning streak since the 2007-08 campaign. Both of the aforementioned six-game winning streaks have been achieved this season under new head coach Wes Moore and his staff.

Holding a five-point lead at halftime, the Wolfpack outscored the Wildcats (5-5) by an impressive 41-29 margin during the final 20 minutes to earn the win.

Four Wolfpackers scored in double figures in the victory, marking the fifth time this season that has occurred. NC State is 4-1 in these contests. Gatling led the way with 21, while Myisha Goodwin-Coleman (14), Burke (13), and Len’Nique Brown (10) also chipped in strong games offensively.

The Wolfpack significantly outrebounded Kansas State, collecting 48 rebounds to the Wildcats’ 29. NC State also dominated the points-off-turnovers category by a 19-2 margin.

NC State leapt out to a fast lead in the first half, using an 8-0 run over a 97-second span to take a 14-5 advantage with 15:00 remaining in the first half. The Wolfpack connected on six of its first 10 field-goal attempts and Burke scored six early points to pace NC State during this run.

With the Wolfpack holding an eight-point lead (21-13) 9:31 into the first half, Kansas State pieced together an 11-4 run over the next 4:01 to pull within one point. Key during this Wildcat surge was the shooting of Brianna Craig, who hit three of her first five three-point attempts to keep Kansas State within striking range.

The Wolfpack would end the half by scoring 11 of the frame’s final 18 points to take a 36-31 lead into the break. NC State shot 14-30 (46.7 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes but was limited to a 1-9 mark (11.1 percent) from distance. Gatling led all scorers with 11 points (4-4 shooting) and seven rebounds. Burke was not far behind with nine points and six boards. Freshman Miah Spencer showed great court vision in the first half, dishing out four assists.

NC State came out of the locker room on fire to start the second frame, ripping off a 9-0 run over the first 2:21 of the half to extend its advantage to 14 (45-31). The Pack would ride this momentum throughout the entire second half, never letting the Wildcats get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

The Wolfpack will next be in action on Monday, Dec. 30 at 9 p.m. EST. NC State will play host San Diego State in the championship game of the 2013 Surf ‘N Slam at Viejas Arena.
