HONOLULU, Hawaii – Five players scored in double figures to pace NC State to an 85-70 victory over Alcorn State on Thursday night at the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
Freshman Erica Donovan scored a season-high 15 points, while Kody Burke tied her career-best with 13 rebounds and added 10 points for her third double-double of the year.
State stormed out of halftime to take a 55-39 lead after two free throws from Donovan with 13:51 to play, capping a 21-11 run out of intermission.
Alcorn State got within 13, but seven in a row, including a three-ball from Donovan made it 64-44 with 11:20 to play.
The lead grew to 24 points, 76-52, after two free throws from Kiana Evans.
State made a season-high 27 free throws in 35 attempts, and held a commanding 58-34 advantage in rebounding.
All 14 players on the roster played in the game, and 12 scored, including red-shirt senior Paige Woodard who scored the first four points of her Wolfpack career.
A 12-2 run for the Pack opened up a 16-6 lead at the 10:56 juncture of the first half. Lakeesa Daniel (10 points, nine rebounds) started it with a layup and Bonae Holston (12 points, eight rebounds) capped it with a jumper.
Myisha Goodwin-Coleman launched a rainbow three-pointer moments later to keep the lead in double figures, 21-11, with 7:40 until halftime.
The advantage was maintained at 10 points on two other occasions, the last at 25-15 on a jumper from Daniel with 5:57 showing on the clock.
However, an 11-5 spurt for the Braves, led by consecutive three-pointers from Breanna Whitfield (14 points), got them to within four, 30-26.
Goodwin-Coleman added a late bucket to send State into the locker room with a 34-28 lead.
Holston moved into ninth all-time in career rebounds at State, and now has 742 for her career.
NC State plays host Hawai’i in the final game of the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Friday at 9:30 p.m ET.
