HONOLULU, Hawaii – A third victory in an as many nights gave NC State the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational title on Friday night at Stan Sherriff Center. The 84-54 win over Hawaii capped a perfect 3-0 trip for the Wolfpack.
Marissa Kastanek was named Most Valuable Player, and Kody Burke was selected for the All-Tournament Team.
NC State (10-3) scored the first 13 points of the game, opened with a 26-5 run, and never looked back in earning the program’s third tournament victory in Hawaii, adding to its previous titles in 1990 and 2000.
Hawaii missed its first 12 shots and turned the ball over 10 times before making its first basket. The ‘Bows, limited to just four field goals in the opening 20 minutes, trailed 49-20 at the break.
Conversely, the Pack fired on all cylinders in the first half, shooting 55.9 percent (19-of-34) from the floor. Kody Burke led all scorers with 11 points, as nine players found the scoring column in the opening half.
The 49 first-half points represented the most scored in any half this season by the Wolfpack.
State opened up its margin to as many as 38 points, 76-38, after a Breezy Williams layup with 7:22 to play. The sophomore from Durham, N.C., scored a career-high 15 points off the bench.
Meanwhile, Bonae Holston (11 points) moved into 16th on the school’s all-time scoring chart with 1,363 career points, passing Umeki Webb (1993-96) and Cristy Earnhardt (1976-79) this evening.
Kastanek added 10 points for State, while Alissa Campenero led Hawaii with 14 points.
NC State opens conference action Monday at home against Georgia Tech at 7 p.m.
