UNCASVILLE, Conn. – On Monday evening, senior center Markeisha Gatling of the No. 21 NC State women’s basketball team became the 14th student athlete in program history to be chosen in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Draft.

With the 10th pick in this year’s draft, the Chicago Sky selected NC State’s Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and Raleigh native. She becomes the third Wolfpacker to be selected in the first round of the college draft*, joining Chasity Melvin (11th overall in 1999) and Summer Erb (11th overall in 2000).

Gatling had an incredible senior season for the Wolfpack, helping lead the team to a 25-8 record, a semifinal appearance in the ACC Tournament, and a berth in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. From Dec. 22, 2013 through the end of the season, Gatling led the nation in field goal percentage (66.3 percent) and leaves NC State as the most accurate shooter (62.8 percent) in the 40-year history of the program.

Gatling and the Sky will open the 2014 WNBA preseason against the Washington Mystics on May 13.
