Opening comments on the schedule, team experience and players returning from injury
It's an exciting year for our team. We're really looking forward to a tough schedule, perhaps one of the toughest we've ever had. It's a great challenge for us. Even our first exhibition game is against WNBA players who are on tour. I think that game will help us so much because it's against stiff competition. The next exhibition is against international players who play a different style, it can't always help us with everything we want to take a look at. The first will help us with everything we want to take a look at. I'm excited about what we can learn from those two games and how they can help us become a better team before we open. We open with a very tough team from Santa Barbara and that will be a challenge for us right off the bat, then of course the Jimmy V Classic.
The main thing, I really like this team and I think they have been approaching conditioning this year with a much stronger mindset. Someone was asking me earlier today about my favorite quote of mine and I said, "Success is not something you aim for, but if you believe in what you do, it just comes naturally." I feel that if our team can stay in this mind set and believe in what they can do, and what each other can do, and then love what they're doing. If they can just do that, our success will come naturally.
We have a great blend of experience and youth. We're at a good point in blending the two. We're not too young, and not just older and experienced. The younger players bring an enthusiasm that everybody has when you start something, and the older players bring that experience with them that we have to have. When you blend those two together every day in practice, you can get the best.
It's great to have Terah James back on the floor with us. We all hope that she has a great year. A lot of ways we can say she deserves it. You'd like to see some good things in the [basketball area] happen to her, she's had good things happen in other areas. She's been with us full speed since we started. It's just that with two years off not playing competitively, and add to that two reconstructed knee, she's going to need time to get into the swing of the game again.
Then with Carisse Moody, Rachel Stockdale and Jennifer Filipowski battling some surgeries and injuries, they're really working hard to get back on the court full speed. Rachel and Carisse have time to get back on the court and get into going up and down the court. They've been limited with what they can do in preseason.
Depth and returning six starters
We haven't really been on the court, but it's good to know that we're not just a six, seven player team. While we have had injuries, a lot of people have been able to get some playing time that they wouldn't have had that much of that early. That should really help us and I'm excited about that. Instead of someone just going into the game now, they've already been in the game. They had to be there when a time that perhaps everyone wasn't ready to carry that much weight. That is something that is going to play to our advantage. Depth is something that we should have plenty of on this team.
The season in relation to the Hall of Fame
People say, 'Success is a journey, not a destination.' I have not arrived there. It was a great destination; I liked that train stop a lot. I had a great evening, a great weekend and I got to stay there a little while. But - my train is moving on now.
The Jimmy V Classic for women
I think this is going to be a special event and it's something I've wanted to do. I wanted to see a Jimmy V Classic for women started, and I wanted it to be here at NC State. When ESPN agreed to do it, and got behind it, their main goal was for us to get the best teams we could. I knew I could call Duke and Tennessee, and ESPN wanted Connecticut in it, so they called them. One phone call for all of us and the teams were in [the tournament]. They are going to be nationally televised games, it's for a great cause and it's going to be competitive. Everyone was quite willing to be a part of it and I think it's an awesome field. I can't think of another tournament at the beginning of the year that has had this time of field. If we have a huge crowd, this can be an event we continue, but it has to be very successful. I would like nothing better than to be able to hold this tournament again.
Remarks from Carisse Moody
The biggest thing we're doing as a team is motivating each other. It helps us to get through practice a lot easier. If we didn't have comradery on this team, practice would [not be easy].
I think that we have to make small goals at the beginning of the season and build our way up to bigger goals. Small goals, like being able to win each half at a time.
Remarks from Kaayla Chones
I've been healthy since summer and I'm ready to go. It means a lot. I try to get in extra workouts when I can and I'm feeling good. I haven't set any individual goals, but right now, I can say I really want to help my teammates. I know that I'm a big part of this team. I just need to make sure I'm consistent and can be someone they can count on. I'm going to try and do that all season.
Our strength lies in our leadership. We have a lot of older players and we need consistent leaders on and off the floor.
On Carisse Moody
We haven't worked out a lot together, but when practice starts it'll be exciting to see how we work together as a four-five. It'll be great to have her back at full speed, as I'm sure she's excited about it as well. We haven't had a chance to work together, but I'm ready for practice to see how things are going to work.
What the season holds
I think we're going to surprise a lot of people this season. Some people still think we're young and inexperienced, and that we have a point guard that hasn't played in two years. But, we also have people on the team who have stepped up and after last season we are motivated. I think we're going to come out with a lot of fuel and surprise people.
