Wolfpack Women Put Unbeaten Record On The Line Against Charleston Southern
Nov. 28, 2001
With a big game against Tennessee ahead, eighth-ranked NC State will have to guard against looking past Charleston Southern on Wednesday when the teams meet at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack (5-0) continued its perfect start Monday with a 74-58 victory over No. 17 Old Dominion, despite a poor performance from leading scorer Carisee Moody.
Moody, who entered the game averaging a team-best 15.5 points, was limited to eight points on 1-of-7 shooting, but junior guard Ivy Gardner had 18 points and eight rebounds in her first start of the season following knee surgery.
"We got fired up in the second half," Gardner said. "It's our home court, and we've got a lot of pride about playing here. We wanted to prove we're a top 10 team."
The 16-point win was N.C. State's easiest since a season-opening 84-47 rout of Radford on Nov. 16. The Wolfpack pulled out single-digit home wins over Drake and then-No. 18 George Washington before coming from behind to beat Indiana, 50-44, on the road Friday.
Should the Wolfpack get past underdog Charleston Southern, they will put their perfect record on the line against No. 2 Tennessee on Sunday in the Honda Elite Classic.
"I'm really proud of our team because we have to play a lot of combinations right now," Wolfpack coach Kay Yow said. "We're really looking for that chemistry."
Yow and the Wolfpack have relied on a suffocating defense during their perfect start, allowing only 52.8 points per game. Opponents are shooting only 34 percent (101-for-296) against N.C. State this season.
The 5-0 start is the Wolfpack's best since opening the 1999-00 season with 14 straight wins.
Charleston Southern (3-2) rebounded from consecutive losses with a 75-47 rout of Southern Virginia on Monday.
Freshman center Amanda Ekberg scored 18 points, and senior forward Cesurian Champagne tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Buccaneers, winless in two road games this season.
North Carolina State has won two all-time meetings against Charleston
Southern by a combined 99 points.
