Holston's 20 Sends Wolfpack Over Seton Hall
RALEIGH, N.C. - Bonae Holston scored a game-high 20 points to lead NC State to a 68-57 victory over Seton Hall Monday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
A 12-3 second-half run by NC State (8-5) broke open a one-possession game with 4:25 left to play - giving the Pack a 61-49 lead.
During the run, Tia Bell banked in jumper and fouled out Nicole Emery (19 points) in the process. Seton Hall never got closer than nine the rest of the game.
In the final minute, Bell drilled a three-pointer from close to 30-feet out with the shot clock buzzing that all but sealed the victory.
Nikitta Gartrell added 13 points for the Wolfpack.
“This is a good win for us," said coach Kellie Harper. "Obviously we didn’t have a great start with too many unforced turnovers, but we settled down. I was proud with the way we finished down the stretch.”
As it has been customary for the Pack lately, a slow start allowed the visiting Pirates to take an early 14-8 lead.
But NC State rallied back with the game's next 18 points for a 26-14 lead with 5:38 left in the first half.
Seton Hall went 6:31 without a point that allowed the home-standing Pack to grab a firm grip of the game with the momentum-swinging run. The Wolfpack's swarming defense forced turnovers into easy transition points.
The advantage grew to 30-18, but Seton Hall ended the half on a 13-4 run to cut the NC State lead to only 34-31 at the half.
Holston, who scored 13 alone in the first half, summed it up simply.
“Any win after a loss helps you and gives you a spark.”
And Harper was pleased with how the offense executed tonight saying that the team has made great strides in understanding the offense the last two weeks.
"We’ve encouraged them to go into the lane for layups," Harper said. "I thought we had a nice balance on offense tonight...getting layups, mid-range jumpers and three's."
NC State leaves early for Los Angeles Tuesday morning as the Pack will take on USC Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST.
