The Wolfpack (+9) opened the spring portion of its 2013-14 schedule with a team round of 297, just two strokes out of second place. Arkansas (E) leads the team standings, followed by Alabama (+7), Iowa State (+8) and NC State (+9). Georgia Regents University Augusta, a perennial Division II golf power, is tied with NCSU in fourth place.
"Our team played hard and I'm proud of our effort and mindset," head coach Page Marsh said. "Everyone is working hard to improve. Brittany and Augusta both played steady and solid rounds. We are looking forward to tomorrow and happy to be playing again."
Marchand finished the first round tied in a four-way tie for second in the 81-player field. Her round of 71 was three shots behind leader Emily Tubert of Arkansas. James fired a 73 and Caroline Ellington added a 75 score. Ana Menendez (+6) and Rachael Taylor (+9) rounded out the NC State lineup.
NC State will continue play in Puerto Rico on Monday and Tuesday.
