NC State Second After First Round of Women's ACC Golf Championship

CLEMMONS, N.C. - NC State stands in second after the first round of the Women's ACC Championship in Clemmons, N.C. The Wolfpack placed three players in the top 20 after the first day, including the field's overall leader, Courtney Pomeranz. The junior fired a three-over par 74 to lead the field.
Duke is atop the leaderboard after 18 holes with a team score of 310, NC State is just five strokes back. Wake Foresr is third (316), North Carolina fourth (320), Florida State fifth (325) and Maryland rounds out the six-team field with a 327.
The biggest story of the day was the weather. The teams played the first round in driving rain and a gusty wind, causing scores to be higher than normal. Temperatures were in the low 40s.
Pomeranz is one stroke ahead of Duke's Virada "Oui" Nirapathpongporn and Wake Forest's Ashley Hoagland. Pomeranz shot a 37 on the front and back nines. Her back nine score was the best of the day. Nirapathpongporn fired a 34 on the front side to lead at the day's half-way point.
The Wolfpack's Erica Wein and Sarah Bonner also rank in the top 20 of the field through day one. Wein is in a five-way tie for seventh with a six-over par 78. Bonner is one stroke back at 79 in a tie for 12th.
Briana Vega is the final scorer on the day for the Wolfpack. Vega was in solid form on the front side with a 38, but ran into trouble on the back nine to finish with a first-round score of 84. Colby Cobb is tied for 25th with an 88.
NC State's first group will tee off at 9 o'clock Saturday morning from the first tee. The Pack will again be paired with Duke and Wake Forest for day two action.
