GREENSBORO, N.C. - Augusta James fired a 1-over 72 on Friday to lead the 21st-ranked NC State women's golf team into third place after round one of the 2013 ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.
The Wolfpack sits at 17-over 301, one shot behind No. 13 Virginia for second. No. 3 Duke leads by seven strokes at 9-over 293.
"I'm really proud of how hard everyone fought today on the golf course," said head coach Page Marsh. "Our team was very excited about this event coming into today. We love coming to play at Sedgefield each year and work hard to prepare for the Donald Ross design."
James is one shot off the lead and tied for second after her sparkling round of 72. She posted a pair of birdies, both on par 5s on Friday.
Ana Menendez and Rachael Taylor are tied for 12th after posting rounds of 5-over 76.
Brittany Marchand rounded out four Wolfpack golfers inside the top 20. Her 6-over 77 left her tied for 18th after round one.
Vivian Tsui is tied for 37th after an 82.
Difficult conditions saw the par-71 layout play nearly seven strokes over par at 77.82 for the 45 competitors in the field.
"The tough weather conditions made for demanding shots that required a great deal of thought, imagination and patience," added Marsh. "I'm proud that this team gave the best they had all day long.
"Some stretches of the course played really difficult with the wind and compact greens."
NC State will tee off with Virginia and Duke between 10:10-10:50 a.m., on Saturday morning in the second round of the championship.
