April 19, 2014
GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State placed three players in the top 12 and the Wolfpack women's golf team finished third in the 2014 ACC Women's Golf Championship.
"I'm really proud of our team's inner belief. They never got down, stayed patient and found a way," head coach Page Marsh said. "They have worked hard to keep getting better and have overcome adversity. I was especially proud to have several spectators comment on how well they represented our school and our game."
Brittany Marchand (76-71-73--220), after a Friday round of 71, carded a 73 and continued her climb near the top of the ACC. Marchand finished in a four-way tie for fifth among the 55-player field. Ana Menendez (77-74-70--221) shot 70 on Saturday to surge into the top 10. The third Wolfpack player in the top 12, Augusta James (75-75-72--222) improved from her first two rounds and was the only player in the field to place 12th.
As a team, Saturday's round finished NC State's rise to the top of the ACC standings. After standing ninth after Thursday's round, NCSU recorded Friday's second-best score to climb to fifth. The Pack duplicated that effort on Saturday, shooting a collective 290 to finish third. NC State was just one shot behind Virginia for second place.
Duke won the tournament by 27 shots and had the top two players in the field. Celine Boutier (-3) was the medalist and won the tournament by five shots over her teammate Laetitia Beck (+2).
"It was a joy to see the seniors finish in the top ten and have three in the top 12," Marsh said. "We had the second low round for two days in a row."
NC State will learn its NCAA assignment Tuesday, April 29.
