GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 21st-ranked NC State women's golf team recorded the best finish in school history with a runner-up showing at the 2013 ACC Championship on Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club.
In extremely tough scoring conditions, the Wolfpack held off No. 13 Virginia to secure second at 54-over 906, three shots better than the Cavaliers. Duke won the event at 882.
Brittany Marchand led the way by tying for sixth at 10-over 223, followed by Augusta James who tied for 12th at 15-over 228. Marchand took advantage of the par-5s all weekend, shooting 4-under on those holes. Her six birdies were the second most in the field.
Ana Menendez finished 16th at 229, while Rachael Taylor and Vivian Tsui placed in a tie for 22nd and 25th, respectively. Tsui also had six birdies over the 54-hole event.
Duke and NC State were the only two teams to have all five competitors finish in the top 25.
The second-place finish tops the 2002 and 2005 squads that placed third in the ACC Championship.
Virginia's Brittany Altomare won the individual title at 4-over 217. All 45 players finished over par with Sunday's final round playing over 7.5 shots higher than the par-71 scorecard.
NCAA Regionals run May 9-11 at a site to be determined.
