FRANKLIN, Tenn.  - NC State’s Brittany Marchand finished sixth overall at the 2012 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, Friday, to propel the Wolfpack to a tie for 13th in its first-ever national championship appearance.

“I’m very proud of our fight,” said NC State head coach Page Marsh. “Our team has handled adversity well all season long, and I’ve never seen them give up in the slightest. Instead, they worked harder and harder to meet their goals, even when it didn’t happen right away.”

Marchand fired a final round 73 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club to climb two spots into a tie for sixth. Her 2-over 290 total fell eight shots shy of medalist Chirapat Jao-Javanil from Oklahoma, but granted her the distinction of becoming NC State's first All-American in program history after scoring an honorable mention Friday evening.

“Brittany’s played so steadily for us, but this week was a superb performance,” said Marsh. “I think she also felt like she left a few strokes out there, and that speaks very highly of her upside over the next two years.”

The Wolfpack saved its best round of the tournament for last, piecing together a 5-over par 293 to finish in a tie for 13th. State fared one shot better than Duke for the tournament, and scored wins over Baylor, Texas A&M, Colorado, Tennessee, Michigan State, Pepperdine, Ohio State, Arkansas, and Stanford. All 10 teams that the Pack defeated were ranked in the top 40 at season’s end.

Augusta James finished seven shots behind Marchand at 9-over, in a tie for 38th after a 1-under 71 on Friday. Ana Menendez came in tied for 84th with her final round 76. Amanda Baker claimed a share of 98th. Vivian Tsui’s 73 rounded out the team scorecard for Friday, and pulled her into a tie for 106th.

“I think [our performance this year] is the culmination of a group effort,” said Marsh. “From all of the players we’ve ever had, our coaches and administration that have been here, everyone’s played a role in building this program.”

With it’s best season ever in the books, NC State turns its focus to a 2012-13 campaign that will see every player from this year’s squad returning.

“It’s all about momentum,” said Marsh. “We’ve gotten to this point, and we have everyone back next year. We’ll play a stronger summer schedule, then come back next season and take it one shot at a time. This week was a great experience for us, and we’ll do everything we can to build on the poise and effort that we showed here.”
