Sep 8, 2013
HANAHAN, S.C. - Senior Brittany Marchand carded a 66 to claim a share of the lead after one round at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club in South Carolina. Marchand, at six shots under par, is tied atop the individual leaderboard with Mississippi State's Ally McDonald.
Marchand posted six birdies in the round, including four in the front nine. She eagled the par-5 15th hole and finished three shots under in both the front and back nine.
"Brittany played well. She was three under for the last four and was solid all day," head coach Page Marsh said. "She made a great save on 17 and birdied the last hole."
As a team, NC State was in the hunt for the top spot all day before ending up tied for fourth place with Wake Forest. The Wolfpack and Demon Deacons both posted a 287 team score, five strokes behind Mississippi State. South Carolina and Clemson are tied for second (285).
"Everyone stayed in it all day," Marsh said. "We were really grinding at times when things weren't easy. We had several birdies at the end and three of our last five had birdies on the last hole."
The Pack, ranked 20th in the women's golf coaches preseason poll, will continue play Monday and Tuesday in the 20-team, 54-hole tournament. Taylor will be the first NC State player to tee off on Tuesday, beginning at 11:05 a.m. Marchand is the fifth and final NC State player to tee off, beginning at 11:41 a.m.
