Women's Golf Travels Near and Far to Open Spring Tournament Play
March 1, 2003
Coming off of a successful fall tournament season, the Wolfpack Women's golf team now readies for spring play and will send two teams into competition Monday and Tuesday. The varsity squad will travel to Houston, Texas for the 2003 Verizon "Mo"morial and the junior varsity team will head to nearby Buies Creek for the Fighting Camel Classic.
Coach Page Marsh will travel with the varsity squad out west for the "Mo"morial, a 54-hole stroke play tournament to be held at the Blackhorse Golf Club. The 6,128 yard course is a par 72. Play will be held March 3-4, Monday and Tuesday, with 36-holes to be played on the first day of competition.
The tournament is named for former Texas A&M standout Monica Welsh, who died in a car accident in 1992. Welsh, a four-year letterwinner from 1978-82, still shares the school record for low round with a 68 and was a two-time TAIAW all-state selection.
The field boasts 19 teams, including two top-15 opponents in Tulane and Indiana.
Others will travel with Assistant Coach Dickie Brewer to the Fighting Camel Classic in Buies Creek, N.C. Hosted by the Campbell Camels at the Keith Hills Country Club, the tournament will also last two days. Eighteen holes will be played on Monday and Tuesday, for a 36-hole stroke play tournament.
