Women's Golf Drives for Third Consecutive Title
March 25, 2002
Wallace, NC- The NC State Women's Golf team continues its torrid play on the links at the Lady Seahawk Golf Invitational by firing team scores of 300 and 299 to hold the overall lead heading into Tuesday's final round. Led by Malin Claesson's 74-73=147, the Wolfpack currently holds three of the top 20 individual scores. Claesson stands in a tie for fourth, Colby Cobb (77-73= 150) is tied for ninth, and Sarah Bonner fired a 76-76-152 to place in T-18th.
After winning only one team tournament in school history prior to this season, the Wolfpack Women have reeled off two straight tournament wins at the Lady Moc Invitational and the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational. NC State holds a three stroke lead over ACC rival Florida State as the Wolfpack look to extend their tournament win streak to three.
Claesson has been outstanding for the Wolfpack in her last four tournaments. She has placed ninth (Pine Needles Invitational), sixth (Lady Moc Classic), and second (Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational) in the last three tournaments for NC State. She stands three stokes behind leader Km Benedict of Michigan heading into the final round.
Coach Page Marsh Lea has assembled a strong cast of golfers in only her second year coaching at NC State. The 2001-2002 season marks only the second season that NC State has fielded a Women's Golf team since 1986. NC State reinstated its golf team last season after a 14 year hiatus.
