Pack Golfers Into Round of 32 at WAPL Championship
ERIN, Wis. NC State’s Lauren Doughtie and Emily Street both advanced to the round of 32 on Wednesday at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Erin Hills Golf Course.
Doughtie defeated Erica Moston of Belmont Calif., 2 and 1, in Wednesday’s opening round of match play.
The fourth-seeded Doughtie, a rising senior at NC State, will face UNC Greensboro sophomore Erica Creed in Thursday’s round of 32. Creed bested Stephany Fleet of Dewitt, Mich., 1-up in first day action.
Meanwhile, the 34th-ranked Street defeated Pennapa Pulsawath of Thailand, 2 and 1, on Wednesday and will face No. 63 Tzu Chi Lin of Chinese Taipei, who outlasted second-seeded Katie Kempter in 20 holes, on Thursday.
In her first round match, Doughtie was 1-down through the first five holes, but made birdie at the par-3 sixth to square the match and registered another birdie at the par-4 eighth to own a 1-up lead at the turn. Moston square the match on the inward half, but Doughtie won Nos. 12 (par) and the par-5 14th (hit the green in two and two-putted for birdie) to build a match-high 2-up lead that she would hold the rest of the way.
“I was probably trying too hard at first, but then I got settled in,” said Doughtie, who shot 1-over 147 (73-74) in stroke play qualifying. “I started to get things going again when I got near the turn.”
Street fell behind immediately when she bogeyed the par-5 first. After squaring the match at the third, Pulsawath took back the lead after another Street bogey at the fourth.
The match remained in favor of Pulsawath after the fifth hole, but Street would go on to win four straight holes to turn a deficit into a 3-up advantage. She would never give up the lead the rest of the way as the match was stopped on No. 17.
There are two rounds of match play on Thursday, June 19, before the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday, June 20. The 36-hole championship final is on Saturday, June 21.
