Doughtie Marches On At North & South Amateur Match Play
VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. Lauren Doughtie moved into the second round of match play at the 105th North & South Women’s Amateur Championship at the famed Pinehurst No. 2 course.
A rising junior at NC State, Doughtie, the 34th seed, defeated No. 31 Amanda Johnson of Tulsa, Okla., 3 & 2 on Wednesday in the opening round of match play.
The Suffolk, Va., native is now one of only 32 golfers remaining in the Championship. Doughtie will take on No. 63 Katie Elliott of Madison, Wis., who upset second-seeded Candace Shepperle, 2 up. Tee time is scheduled for 8:34 am on Thursday.
Doughtie posted a 36-hole score of 152 (77-75) over two days of stroke play earlier in the week to qualify for match play.
Doughtie has been on a role in match play over the past two weeks. She finished as the runner-up at the Virginia State Amateur Championship last Friday.
154 women began in the first round of stroke play qualifying on Monday, but only 63 players qualified for match play, with the defending champion Jenny Suh of Fairfax, VA, rounding out the Championship field.
Spectators are encouraged and do not need a ticket. The Championship will end with the 105th Women’s North & South Champion being crowned Sunday, July 22nd following a 36-hole final match. For full qualifying results and the Match Play draw, please log on to:
