BATH, Ontario - NC State's Brittany Marchand won the Investors Group Ontario Women's Amateur title Thursday, pulling away from the field for a seven shot victory at Loyalist Country Club.
Marchand began the final round of the 54-hole tournament tied with Delaney Howson of Newmarket, one shot ahead of the field at 2-under par. The rising junior carded five birdies in her final seven holes down the stretch to pull away and finish with a course record 67 for a three-day total of 73-69-67--209 (-7).
"I saw the putts going in, and they were dropping for me. My swing felt good and it wasn't too stressful coming in so that was a good thing," said Marchand. "I felt like it was my time, I've worked hard all summer and I knew that I had the ability to do it. I've fallen short a few times, so it was good to get this one."
Teammate Augusta James, the defending champion at the event, finished seven shots back in a tie for second with her 73-72-71--216 (E). Vivian Tsui also finished in the top-10, finishing ninth alone at 8-over par with a second round 68 on the event.
The championship determines the top three golfers that will represent Ontario in the Rouale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship which is set to be contested at Lethbridge Country Club in Alberta this August. Ontario will have strong representation with an all Team Canada trio; Marchand, James and Jennifer Kirby will be in the hunt for the 2012 team title.
Marchand also finished as the medalist at her qualifying site for the 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur. Marchand's 74 led the field at the Country Club of Detroit to ensure her a place in the prestigious women's amateur, held August 6-12 in Cleveland, Ohio.
"This was my goal this year to win this tournament and show everyone that I have the ability to do it," said Marchand. "My game has come so far, so I think it just shows that I've worked really hard."
