Doughtie Moves To Round of 32 at U.S. Amateur
EUGENE, Ore. NC State’s Lauren Doughtie never trailed during Wednesday’s match to earn a 1-up victory over Mina Harigae at the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship golf tournament.
Doughtie, seeded 49th among the field of 64, was 2-up on two occasions during the tight match that was neck-and-neck most of the morning. The match was all square at the turn when Doughtie took the lead for good after Harigae posted bogey at the par-4 10th hole.
Doughtie went 2-up two holes later when Harigae had another bogey, this time at the par-3 12th. The match tightened when Harigae won No. 14, however, Doughtie kept her cool and maintained her lead the remaining four holes to earn the victory.
Harigae, ranked 16th in the field, will compete for Duke this fall and was the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion.
Doughtie will now take on No. 48 Kristina Wong, 17, of Vestal, N.Y. at 7:40 am PDT. Wong cruised to a 5 & 4 win over No. 17 Tiffany Lua on Wednesday. Last year, Wong shared medalist honors during the stroke play portion of the 2007 event and advanced to the Round of 32 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
Match play continues Thursday with second and third round action from Eugene Country Club.
