Pack Women's Golf Opens Fall Season at Cougar Classic
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s golf team opens its fall schedule at the Cougar Classic (Sept. 9-11), hosted by the College of Charleston, at the par-72, 6,219-yard Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.
In addition to the Wolfpack, the Cougar Classic field will consist of 11 ranked squads in the Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NCGA) Division I College Women's Preseason Coaches' Poll, including top-ranked and defending national champion Alabama in this year’s Classic field.
With a field featuring some of the top collegiate women’s golf programs in the country and challenging course, State head coach Page Marsh believes the Cougar Classic will provide a good opening test for her team.
“We love this event. A lot of teams feel that way, hence the field that's going to be there,” said Marsh. “The course is seemingly benign, but it demands of you to be in the right place to score. It’s a great way to open your season.”
While the quintet combined to post 12 top-10 individual finishes, including individual crowns for James, who was as recently named to Golf World’s Top 50 Collegiate Players To Watch, and Marchand, the Pack have set the bar high for the upcoming fall and spring campaigns.
“Last week, they talked about their team goals,” said Marsh. “Obviously, they want to win, but they also want to finish in the top five in our fall events which is a good indicator of how well they are playing. This weekend will show where we stack up with the teams ranked ahead of us.
The Classic field also features No. 3 Duke, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 7 Auburn, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Florida, No. 10 LSU, No. 12 Virginia, No. 13 Tennessee and No. 17 South Carolina.
