Chapman Leads Wolfpack in Lady Tar Heel First Round
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. NC State women’s golf is tied for 15th after Friday’s first round of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course.
Beginning at hole No. 10 in the last grouping of the morning, the Wolfpack shot a team score of +24 (312).
Freshman Meghan Chapman led the way with a two-over 74 and is tied for 14th overall. She had back-to-back birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 to get to two-under on her round. The Seminole, Fla., native made the turn at even-par and had two bogeys at Nos. 5 and 6 to post her best collegiate score in just her second collegiate tournament.
Lauren Doughtie shot a six-over 78 to tie for 45th. It was an uncharacteristic front nine for the All-ACC selection with a 41, which included a double bogey at No. 13. The front nine was much better with a birdie at No. 1.
Joanna Saleeby finished with a seven-over 79 and is tied for 49th. Her round was going fine until an eight at the par-4 18th left her at 42 for the front nine. A birdie at No. 3 got Saleeby back on track to shoot just one-over 37 on the front nine.
Julie Saleeby and Emily Street each recorded a nine-over 81 to tie for 67th. Saleeby’s round was derailed with a triple and quadruple bogey on the Wolfpack’s front nine. But similar to her teammates today, the front nine was much better as she had birdies at Nos. 3 and 9 to shoot an even-par 36.
Street did struggle on the front nine, however. A birdie at No.13 highlighted a three-over 39 on the back nine, but her final nine holes were a test with five bogeys and one double. Street did pick up a birdie at the par-5 3rd.
Wake Forest and Virginia lead the 18-team field at +6 (294), followed by UNC in third at +11 (299). The rest of the field is bunched up tight as the Wolfpack is only 11 shots out of fourth place.
Second round action begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
