Oct. 10, 2013
The NC State women's golf team, ranked 14th in the nation, will face a loaded tournament field this weekend at North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course.
The three-round, 54-hole event begins Friday morning and continues through Sunday. The 18-team tournament field includes 12 nationally-ranked teams, including four of the country's top five. The No. 14 Wolfpack will be competing against No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Oklahoma as well as No. 4 Duke and No. 5 Florida. Arkansas (8th), Clemson (11th), Virginia (16th), Vanderbilt (19th), Michigan State (20th) and South Carolina (24th) are also in the tournament.
In addition to a strong list of competition, the Wolfpack will be going up against uncharacteristically rainy weather in North Carolina. Head coach Page Marsh has taken her team to play Finley Golf Course twice already this fall, so the team is familiar with the terrain. She said it will be up to the team to be resilient and mentally strong through any wet conditions.
"Golf doesn't work with an entitled mindset," Marsh said. "Our players will need to have some flexibility and go with the flow of things. We know the course and have challenged our team to visualize how to play and be mentally strong."
The event in Chapel Hill is NC State's third of the fall season. State has been in the top five in each of its first two tournaments. After this weekend, NC State will conclude fall tournament play at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., October 25-27.
