    Nassau, Bahamas - The 25th ranked NC State gymnastics team took first place in its first meet of the 2001 season. The Wolfpack came out on top at the Bahamas Breeze Invitational with a team score of 192.550. NC State downed two other ranked squads, No. 24 Kentucky (192.450) and No. 23 BYU (191.650).

    The Wolfpack entered its last rotation 0.900 points behind Kentucky. The Pack then put together a meet-high 49.050 on the uneven bars to overtake the Wildcats by a margin of 0.100 points.

    Senior Kelli Brown kicked off her final season with a strong showing. Brown took first on floor with a score of 9.875 and also the bars with a 9.9. Overall, Brown took second in the all-around with a score of 39.075. Brown was also fourth on vault (9.8) and sixth on bars (9.5).

    A trio of gymnasts returned to action after missing last season with injuries. Senior Amy Langendorf, who tore her ACL in the first meet last year, competed on bars and came away with a score of 9.725 for ninth place. Fellow senior Aimee Panton returned from a broken arm and competed on three events. Panton scored a 9.625 on vault (11th), 9.65 on bars (12th) and 8.95 on floor (17th). Junior Marlyn Madey has been unable to compete each of the past two seasons because of a foot injury also competed in three events. Madey captured sixth on bars with a 9.8, 12th on floor with a 9.625, and 17th on beam (8.9).

    Senior Laura Jazab placed fifth on the bars with a 9.825 and also sixth on beam (9.5). Junior Stephanie Southard looked strong by scoring a 9.775 on vault and 9.8 on bars. Classmate Cara Dougherty was fifth on beam (9.525) and seventh on floor (9.725).

     

     

    Competing in their first collegiate meets were freshmen Jessica Campbell and Cori Goldstein. Campbell scored a 9.6 on vault for 13th place, while Goldstein was seventh on floor (9.725) and 15th on beam (9.075).

    NC State will travel to Kent State next weekend for a Sunday afternoon meet.
