Gymnastics Opens Season With Win

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team opened its 2005 season in impressive fashion with a 192.400-189.300 win over Rutgers Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum. NC State swept all the event titles on the evening. Senior Cori Goldstein won both beam and floor for the Pack, and Rachel Katz won vault and Kylah Bachman took home top honors on bars.
The Wolfpack started the night out on vault, with three freshmen in the line-up, came up with a team score of 48.300. Sophomore Rachel Katz led the way for the Pack with a score of 9.775 to capture a first place finish. Junior Kylah Bachman and freshman Leigha Hancock each posted scores of 9.675 to finish in a tie for second. Rounding out the scoring for NC State was senior Cori Goldstein in fourth with a 9.625, and freshman Laurie Singer with a 9.55.
NC State then moved over to bars and scored a 48.350. Bachman won the bars title with her score of 9.725. Sophomore Amanda Jones and freshman Heather Zolton each scored a 9.675 to tie for second. Senior Amanda Petrocelli tallied a 9.625 for fourth, and Katz finished fifth with her 9.65.
NC State then had to count a fall on beam, and came away with a score of 47.500. Goldstein came away with a 9.725 to win beam. Hancock was close behind with her 9.675 for second, while Petrocelli scored a 9.65 for third. Other scores for NC State were Jennifer Gray with a 9.45 and Jones with her 9.0.
The Pack finished up the meet on floor with a team score of 48.250. Goldstein took top honors on floor with here score of 9.85 for the title. Katz was close behind in second with her score of 9.8. Freshman Kelsey Lee was fourth with a 9.65. Bachman placed sixth with a 9.525, while Zolton finished with a 9.425.
The Wolfpack will hit the road next weekend, competing at Denver. NC State returns to home action Saturday, January 29, hosting James Madison and William & Mary at 7:00 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
