INDIANAPOLIS – The NC State gymnastics team received its 12th consecutive selection to compete in the 2014 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships, as announced Monday afternoon by the NCAA. The Wolfpack will compete in the Athens, Ga., regional, hosted by University of Georgia.

“We’re excited to compete at the University of Georgia,” said head coach Mark Stevenson. “It was the closest regional site for us to travel to and we feel like we got a good draw and can compete with most of the teams there. We’re looking forward to our trip”

Also competing in the six-team regional will be Michigan, Central Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers, along with host Georgia.

Head coach Mark Stevenson, now in his 34th season, leads the Pack into the postseason for the 26th time in program history, all of which have come under his direction.

State was led by sophomore Brittni Watkins this season, who was named EAGL Gymnast of the Year on Friday. She led the squad with 44 top-three finishes on the season. Stephanie Ouellette, who was named EAGL Senior Gymnast of the Year on Friday, has hit her stride over the past two weeks. She tied for the third best score in school history in the all-around with a 39.525 against New Hampshire on March 16, prior to winning the conference title in the all-around this past weekend with a score of 39.300.

The Wolfpack enters the competition with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 195.615, ranking 28th in the nation. Georgia is the top seed in the regional with a team RQS of 197.625, which ranks sixth in the country. Michigan ranks seventh with a 197.105, while Central Michigan is 18th with a 195.905. Ohio State is 22nd at 195.905 and Rutgers ranks 32nd with a 195.340.

Six regionals will be held throughout the country with the top two teams in each region advancing to the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, held April 18-20 in Birmingham, Ala.

The top two all-around competitors, along with the event winners from each regional, will also receive an automatic bid if they are not already on one of the teams that will advance to the championship round.

Last season at the NCAA Regional, the Pack finished fifth at the Ohio State regional with a team score of 195.275.

The action will get underway Saturday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
