Gymnastics Opens Fall Practice
Sept. 11, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State gymnastics began preparing for the upcoming season with its first mandatory practice on Monday afternoon.
“I thought the athletes did really well today, they’re all really excited about getting started and you can see it in their attitude and energy level and they did a lot of positive things,” said head coach Mark Stevenson.
The Wolfpack is coming off a season in which the team ranked 17th in the final troester.com polls, the highest ranking in the final polls since 1999.
State lost six seniors from last year’s squad, but has a strong nucleus returning, including NCAA Regional Champion on bars, Rachel Fincham.
“It’s tough to replace that kind of production,” Stevenson said. “You hope that the athletes that you bring in will perform at a level that is consistent across the board, which is what our senior class did.”
“We’ve got some really good athletes coming in as freshmen,” said Stevenson. “Some of them are going to make immediate impacts.”
Last season, the Wolfpack enjoyed a season full of success, including signature wins over then-No. 10 Penn State at the Sweetheart Invitational and the NCAA Regional. State capped off the season by receiving its 10th-consecutive NCAA Championship selection, and went on to finish third at the regional, just tenths shy of qualifying for the National Championships.
