RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's soccer team lost its 2012 home opener 3-1 to Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at soggy Dail Soccer Field.
Cincinnati (1-0-1) pushed across an early goal in the eighth minute from Laura Rose, and would add one in the 38th minute from Mackenzie Grause to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Between the two first-half scores, NC State had three good looks at goal. Already the fourth corner kick of the game in the 12th minute saw Meghan Proper connect with a diving Shelli Spamer, who attempted to slam a header into the near post, but it went just wide.
Caroline Gentry took hold of a cross from Jennie Krauser in the 20th minute, but UC keeper Kristina Utley pushed the ball away for one of her five saves.
Proper had a point blank one-timer herself in the 33rd minute, but Utley hauled in the shot and the Pack trailed by two at the half.
Gentry and Krauser worked well most of the match and the combo finally hit pay dirt in the 70th minute. Gentry timed her run perfectly and headed Krauser's deep cross into the net for her first collegiate goal and the Pack was in business down just 2-1.
But the momentum was short lived as Rose struck for her second of the game, and third already of the season in the 73rd minute when she grabbed a loose ball and chipped a shot over NC State goalie Victoria Hopkins.
The Wolfpack held a 17-9 shot advantage, and a commanding 9-2 lead in corner kicks, but could not muster up enough quality scoring opportunities.
NC State hits the road for two games next weekend. The Pack will play at Texas on Friday, Aug. 24 at 9 p.m. ET in Austin. The game will be shown on the Longhorn Network. The club will then play at LSU on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., at 2 p.m. ET.
