Cavaliers Down Wolfpack In ACC Opener
Sept. 19, 2001
Raleigh, N.C. - Ashely Meeker scored twice for the #11 Virginia Cavaliers as the Wahoo women defeated the NC State Wolfpack 2-0 at the WRAL Soccer Complex Wednesday evening. The win vaults UVA to 3-1 overall (1-0 ACC), while the Wolfpack drops to 2-3 overall (0-1 ACC).
The Wolfpack controlled most of the action during the first 20 minutes, outshooting Virginia 5-0 early on. Sophomore Lindsey Underwood (Princess Anne, Maryland) nearly put the Wolfpack ahead early on a breakaway in the 10th minute, only to have two shots turned aside by Cavalier goalkeeper Anne Abernethy. In the 40th minute, junior Adrienne Barnes (Clemmons, North Carolina) juked a UVA defender and rifled a blast, just missing the left corner of the net.
Meeker's first goal came at 62:03 of the second half on a Wolfpack turnover in its own end. The ball squirted free to her in front of the Wolfpack net and she deposited the shot just under Wolfpack goalkeeper Gretchen Lear for the tally.
Meeker netted her second goal of the night off a corner kick from the left side of the field. The curving blast sailed just over the head of Lear and settled into the right corner of the net for a 2-0 UVA lead.
Lear managed seven saves in the loss, while Abernethy notched six.
"Our first 20 minutes of the match were brilliant," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We were really taking it to them out there. We just couldn't capitalize in either half."
"We also have to be smarter offensively, because we had a few offsides calls in the first half that took away some opportunities for us."
The Wolfpack now travels to Tallahassee to face the 17th-ranked Florida State Seminoles (3-2, 1-0 ACC) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
