RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer lost 2-1 to No. 7 Wake Forest Thursday night at Dail Soccer Field.
Riley Ridgiz scored the game winner in the 70th minute that gave the Demon Deacons its sixth-straight win, and improve to 9-1, 2-0 in the ACC. NC State falls to 8-3, 0-2 in the ACC. All three losses have come to teams ranked in the top 25.
Freshman Stephanie Bronson continued her torrid scoring pace in the 18th minute to give the Wolfpack an early 1-0 lead. She scored on a header for the first time all season when she put home a cross sent into the middle of the box from defender Alex Berger. The ball looped directly over the goalie and it was her team-leading sixth goal of the year, and fourth-straight game with a marker.
Five minutes later freshman Julia Sandridge nearly made it 2-0 when she nudged a shot just over the cross bar in the 24th minute.
Wake Forest forced State keeper Kim Kern to make her first tough save of the night minutes later when she dove to stop a shot from Jackie Logue.
The sixth and final corner of the first half for the Wolfpack nearly paid off as Paige Dugal found a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and she sent a left-footed boot off the cross bar in the 35th minute.
Exactly one minute later Wake scored the equalizer at the 35:51 mark. Katie Stengel took the initial shot that was saved by Kern, but the ball popped straight up near the goal mouth and Rachel Nuzzolese headed in her fourth goal of the season.
The score remained 1-all at the half.
Kern was busy all night long making 10 saves, while Aubrey Bledsoe came up with four stops for the Deacs.
