RALEIGH, N.C. – Kaitlyn Kerr scored in the 65th minute to send No. 4 Duke to a 1-0 victory over NC State in the regular-season finale for both women’s soccer clubs Thursday night at Dail Soccer Field.
The Wolfpack falls to 10-8-2, 1-7-2 in the ACC, and with a RPI of 37, NC State will have to wait on a chance at the NCAA Tournament.
Meanwhile, Duke (16-2-1, 8-1-1 ACC) earns the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament with tonight’s victory, earning the programs second league regular-season title.
Kim Kern made six more saves to increase her ACC-leading total to 104, the eighth most in school history.
A ricochet in the 34th minute almost gave NC State a miraculous goal by freshman Stephanie Bronson. She was in the process of running down a through ball, and at the same time Duke keeper Tara Campbell broke from her goal mouth and the two collided.
The ball rolled from some 20 yards directly towards the goal line, but Kim DeCasare made a sliding save just inches before the ball was about to give the Pack a lead.
Duke’s goal came when Mollie Pathman chipped a cross from the left side of the net and Kerr put a head on the pass for her fifth goal of the season at 64:26.
NC State has its best win total since 2002 with 10 victories, and is guaranteed a finish above .500 for the first time in three seasons under Steve Springthorpe.
The Wolfpack's six seniors, Kristina Argiroff, Alex Berger, Tanya Cain, Paige Dugal, Jordan Edwards and Kern were honored in a brief ceremony before the game. The six have combined to play in 400 games for NC State.
